Two things sink a fence project, and neither of them is the fence. Build eight inches over the property line and you are moving the whole run. Set a post above the frost line and it will be leaning within three winters.
So we start with your survey and agree the line before anything is dug, then auger below the frost line and set every post in concrete. The boards are the part you see. The posts decide how it looks in five years.

Privacy Fence Installation
The standard request and the one we build most: a solid pressure-treated or cedar privacy fence at the height your yard allows, with posts set in concrete and a capped top rail to keep water out of the end grain.
Board-on-Board and Horizontal Slat Fences
Board-on-board overlaps the pickets so no gap opens when the wood shrinks. A horizontal slat topper adds height and light without a solid-wall look, and it is the detail we are asked for most often now.
Fence Replacement and Removal
We take out the old fence, dig out the old concrete, dispose of everything and build new. Removing old footings properly is the step most quotes quietly skip, and it is why some new fences end up with posts in the wrong place.
Fence Repair and Post Replacement
Leaning posts, sagging panels, a section flattened by a storm, gates that have dropped. If the run is fundamentally sound we replace what has failed rather than selling you a whole fence.
Gates, Latches and Hardware
A gate is the part of a fence that moves, so it is the part that fails. We build gates with proper bracing and hang them on heavy hardware, and we will square up a dropped gate on an existing fence.
Privacy Screens and Deck Enclosures
Sometimes the answer is not a taller fence but a privacy screen on the deck, where the by-law allows more height. We build these to match the deck rather than bolting on a panel that looks like an afterthought.
Fence Materials and Finishes, and What They Do Here
Most fences in this area are pressure-treated, and for good reason. Here is what we build with most, and how it behaves through an Ontario year.
Pressure-Treated Spruce and Pine
The default, and a sound one. Cheap, strong, widely available and treated to resist rot in ground contact. It will move as it dries, so board spacing and fastening matter. Stain it after a season and it will look far better for far longer.
Horizontal Slat Toppers
An open slat section above a solid fence buys you height and light without the solid-wall look. It is the detail we are asked for most often now, and it works on both cedar and treated runs.
Stain It, or Let It Weather
Bare pressure-treated wood turns silver-grey in about a year and a half here. Stained, it holds its colour, sheds water far better and checks less. Let it dry out for a season first, because staining wet lumber is money wasted.
We also build in western red cedar, cedar boards on pressure-treated posts, and composite or vinyl panels. We haven't shown those here because every photo on this page is our own work. Ask and we will talk you through the trade-offs and show you a job in progress.
Newmarket Fence By-law: Heights, Permits and Pools
These are the numbers from the Town of Newmarket's fence by-law. If you are in Aurora, Bradford or elsewhere in York Region, the figures differ, and we check yours before quoting.
- Rear yard
- Maximum 2 metres (7 ft). This is the height most privacy fences are built to.
- Side yard
- Maximum 1.8 metres (6 ft).
- Front yard
- Maximum 1 metre (3 ft). This catches people out: you cannot simply continue a 6-foot fence around to the front.
- Privacy screens
- Allowed up to 3 metres (9 ft 10 in) in sections of up to 9 metres, but they must sit at least 1.2 m from a side or rear lot line and 4.5 m from the front lot line.
- Fence permit
- Not required for a normal residential fence in Newmarket, with one important exception below.
- Pool enclosures
- A permit is required, and every pool needs an enclosure regardless of when it was installed. Separate application, separate inspection.
- Before digging
- Call Ontario One Call on 1-800-400-2255. It is free, it is the law, and a fence line is exactly where buried services tend to run.

What Affects the Cost of a Fence
Fencing is usually quoted per linear foot, but these are the things that move that rate.
Length and height
A 6-foot fence uses more board and bigger posts than a 4-foot one over the same run.
Material
Pressure-treated, treated posts with cedar boards, full cedar, then composite and vinyl.
Removing the old fence
Especially digging out old concrete footings, which is slow work.
Grade and obstacles
A sloping run needs stepped or racked panels. Tree roots, rock and buried services all cost time.
Gates
Every gate is a small build of its own: bracing, hardware, and getting it to swing true.
Access
If a machine cannot reach the line, every hole is dug by hand and the labour reflects it.

Under the Town of Newmarket fence by-law, a rear-yard fence can be up to 2 metres (7 ft), a side-yard fence up to 1.8 metres (6 ft), and a front-yard fence only 1 metre (3 ft). A privacy screen is allowed up to 3 metres but must be set back at least 1.2 m from side and rear lot lines.
Not for a normal residential fence. The exception is a pool enclosure, which does require a permit, and in Ontario every pool needs an enclosure regardless of when it was built.
Below the frost line, roughly 1.2 metres (4 ft) in our area, set in concrete. Shallower posts heave, and a heaved post takes the whole panel with it. It is the single most common reason we are called out to fix someone else's fence.
A fence on the boundary is generally a shared responsibility under Ontario's Line Fences Act, and costs are normally split. In practice it goes far better if you talk to your neighbour before you book the work rather than after the posts go in.
Yes, and often we should. If one section blew down or a few posts have rotted, replacing that run is far cheaper than doing the whole perimeter. We will match the existing style as closely as the material still allows.
Most residential fences are a two to four day job, split across two visits so the post concrete can cure before rails and boards go on. Removing an old fence adds a day.
Yes, but not immediately. Let it dry out for a season first, then stain. It will hold colour far better and you will get several more years before the boards start to check and grey.
