An Aurora Fence Contractor Who Knows Where the Town Draws the Line
Aurora lets you build a little more fence than most of its neighbours. A side-yard fence can reach 2.0 metres here, where Newmarket stops at 1.8, and the front yard allows 1.2 metres instead of 1.0. The catch is that the 2.0 metres includes the lattice or slat topper. Measure the panel alone and you will be over.
We work that out at quoting, check the line against your survey, and set every post in concrete below the frost line. If there is a pool behind the fence, we tell you about the enclosure permit before anything is ordered, not after.
Aurora Fence By-law: Heights and Permits
These are Aurora's numbers, from Fence By-law 6429-22. They differ from Newmarket's: both the side and front yards allow more here.
- Front yard
- Maximum 1.2 metres (4 ft), 200 mm more than Newmarket allows.
- Side and rear yards
- Maximum 2.0 metres, and that includes trim, lattice caps and any decorative topper. A slat topper counts toward the height.
- Hedges
- A hedge or row of shrubs that acts as a fence is held to the same limits.
- Fence permit
- Not required to build or replace a fence, unless it encloses a pool.
- Pool enclosures
- A pool enclosure permit is needed before work starts. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching.
- The by-law
- Town of Aurora Fence By-law 6429-22, which also covers cost-sharing between neighbours. By-law Services: 905-727-3123.
- Before digging
- Call Ontario One Call on 1-800-400-2255 for locates. It is free, it is the law, and a fence line or footing is exactly where buried services turn up.
We measure the finished height, topper included, before we quote. Nobody enjoys cutting down a fence that is 150 mm over.
What Is Different About Fencing in Aurora
Toppers count toward the height
Aurora's 2.0 m limit includes trim, lattice caps and decorative tops. A 6-ft panel with a 1-ft slat topper is already at the limit.
More room at the front
1.2 m in the front yard is enough for a real picket fence or a low decorative run. Newmarket's 1.0 m is not.
Hedges are fences too
A hedge that acts as a fence is held to the same heights, which is worth knowing if you are pairing a fence with planting.
Pool gates close themselves
Aurora requires self-closing, self-latching gates on pool enclosures. We build and hang them to that standard.
